St Louis Church,
Adyar, Chennai, India
in the southern part of the metropolitan city of Chennai
began as a mission centre of the Archdiocese of Madras in 1887. It was erected
as a parish of the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore on 20th July, 1964 when the new church was officially
inaugurated. St Louis IX, the King of France was made the patron of the Church
in honour of the then Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore, Most Rev Dr Louis Mathias
SDB. A salient feature of the parish has been the presence of educational
institutions. While the Montfort Brothers of St Gabriel cater to the physically
challenged children with a school cum college, the Patrician Brothers run two English
Medium Higher
Secondary Schools and a College
of Higher Education. The
Marian Shrine of Besant Nagar was bifurcated from this parish as also the
parishes of Perungudi and Vettuvankani, now in the diocese of Chingleput. The
Eucharistic chapel was built in 2003, and the Community Hall in 2004. The
foundation stone for a new church was laid on 4th February, 2007. The new Church was built by
Rev Fr
S J Anthonysamy and consecrated by Archbishop
A M Chinnappa SDB on 21st December 2008.
